B2B Google Ads in Manchester: when Search beats LinkedIn
The job-title problem, the leads that are students and suppliers, and the campaign a Manchester B2B firm runs when it sells to a buyer with a budget
When a Manchester B2B firm should buy Search clicks rather than LinkedIn, the clicks that are students and suppliers, and the campaign that finds a buyer.

Google Search beats LinkedIn for a B2B firm when the buyer already knows what they need and types it: contract packing Manchester, CNC machining Trafford Park, commercial cleaning contract Salford, payroll outsourcing for a 40-person firm. LinkedIn wins when the buyer does not yet know they need it and has to be reached by job title. Most Manchester B2B firms selling a defined service to a buyer with a budget belong on Search first, and the two faults that make them doubt it are both fixable: the clicks that are students, job seekers and suppliers, and the conversion count that treats a brochure download as a lead.
The job-title problem, and what Search does instead
LinkedIn lets you choose the person: operations director, 50 to 200 staff, Greater Manchester. Search lets you choose the moment: the hour the operations director types what they need. The first is expensive and patient; the second is cheaper and impatient. A firm that sells something a buyer searches for, a service with a name, a process, a certification, gets more from the moment than from the person. A firm that sells something buyers do not know to search for, a new category or a change of supplier nobody is considering, needs the person, and Search will only find the few who are already looking.
| Signal | Search first | LinkedIn first |
|---|---|---|
| The buyer types a service name | Yes | |
| The buyer needs educating that the problem exists | Yes | |
| Sales cycle | Weeks: the search is the start of a purchase | Months: the ad is the start of a conversation |
| Budget under a few thousand a month | Yes; Search spends on intent | Rarely; the audience is small and the clicks dear |
| The firm has a page per service | Yes; each is a landing page | Not needed; the ad is the message |
The leads that are not leads
- Students, from the universities: what is contract packing, CNC machining course, payroll outsourcing meaning. Negatives for course, degree, meaning, what is, how to, and the universities by name.
- Job seekers: machinist jobs Manchester, packing jobs Trafford, cleaning contracts vacancies. Negatives for jobs, vacancies, apply, salary, agency, and the job boards.
- Suppliers and competitors: firms searching the category to see who advertises, and sales teams searching the firm's name to pitch it. The second is unavoidable; the first is reduced by the negatives above and a page that qualifies by minimum order.
- Brochure downloads counted as conversions. A download is a student with an essay as often as a buyer. The conversion is a form that asks for the company and the volume, or a call over two minutes.
Read the last 90 days of search terms and mark each row buyer, student, job seeker or supplier. In B2B accounts that have never been read this way, the buyers are usually under half the clicks and most of the leads, which is the whole case for the negatives list.
The campaign a Manchester B2B firm runs
- One ad group per service, in phrase and exact match, with the service's name and the terms a buyer uses: contract, outsourced, supplier, B2B, trade, wholesale, for businesses.
- A landing page per service that says who it is for in the first line, with a minimum order or a typical client size, so that the wrong reader leaves before the form.
- A form that asks for the company name and the volume or the number of staff, and a call tracked at two minutes. Those two are the conversions; nothing else counts.
- Location set to presence, Greater Manchester and the towns the firm serves, with Trafford Park, Salford Quays and the industrial estates by name where the search terms show them.
- A schedule for office hours, because the operations director searches at a desk, and a desktop bid that is not lowered, for the same reason.
- A remarketing list from the service pages, used for the second search a buyer makes a fortnight later, not for display banners.
The Manchester searches that look like buyers and are not
Three groups fill a B2B search terms report in this city and none of them buys. The universities put tens of thousands of students in front of the same vocabulary: a search for the service name with meaning, definition, course or example behind it is an essay, not an order. The city's agencies and consultancies search the category to map it, which is the supplier row. And the firm's own competitors search its name, which cannot be stopped and should not be counted. The fourth group is the one that costs most quietly: firms too small to be customers, typing the service with a single unit behind it, one pallet, one box, one hour, which the page's minimum order line answers before the form does.
Reading the account at ninety days
The report for a B2B account carries five lines: spend, qualified enquiries, cost per qualified enquiry, quotes issued from the sales log, and quotes won where the firm knows it. Clicks and click-through rate are in the appendix, because a B2B campaign that cleans its traffic sees both fall while the lines that matter rise. The first month's job is the negatives list; the second month's is the pages; the third month's is the first read of cost per quote. A firm that judges at thirty days judges the negatives list, not the campaign.
What to expect, and when to add LinkedIn
B2B Search is slow to read: a dozen qualified enquiries a month is a good account, and a month with three is not a failure. Judge at ninety days on qualified enquiries per pound, with the sales team's log of which became quotes. Add LinkedIn when two things are true: the Search campaign has found the buyers who search and there are no more to find, and the firm has a case study it can put in front of a job title. The B2B service page describes how we run both; the negatives guide beside this one is the list that keeps the students out.
Questions on this topic
Should a Manchester B2B firm use Google Ads or LinkedIn?
Search first when buyers type the service's name; LinkedIn when buyers have to be told the problem exists. Most firms selling a named service start on Search.
Why are my B2B leads students and job seekers?
Because the service name is also a course name and a job title. A negatives list for course, meaning, jobs, vacancies and the universities removes most of them.
Should a brochure download count as a conversion?
No. Count a form that asks for the company and the volume, or a call over two minutes. Downloads teach the bidding to find students.
How long before B2B Search shows results?
Ninety days, read on qualified enquiries per pound with the sales team's log. A dozen a month is a good account.
Does a B2B campaign need a page per service?
Yes. Each service is a search and each search needs a page that says who it is for in the first line.
